Where It Began

In December 2023, a small group of researchers gathered with a shared conviction: that the gap between scientific discovery and real-world impact in sustainable materials was not just a technical problem — it was a community problem.

The fields of green materials, membrane technology, and environmental engineering were producing important work. But the pathways connecting that work to other researchers, to students, to policymakers, and to industries that could use it were fragmented, slow, and unequally accessible — especially for researchers working outside the major research hubs of Europe and North America.

On December 11, 2023, six researchers formalized that conviction into an organization. The Green and Sustainable Materials Society (GSMS) was established in Bandar Lampung, Indonesia, with a founding team drawn from across the disciplines it intended to serve.

Weeks later, on January 4, 2024, the society received full legal recognition from the Ministry of Law and Human Rights of the Republic of Indonesia (No. AHU-0000038.AH.01.07.TAHUN 2024) — a foundation not just legal, but symbolic: this community was built to last.

What We Are Building

GSMS is not simply a journal publisher. It is a platform for a community — one that takes seriously the responsibility of connecting science to the sustainability challenges that cannot wait.

We publish through our open-access journal platform at greensusmater.com, which currently hosts three international journals:

  • Greensusmater — advancing green and sustainable materials science and technology
  • Green and Sustainable Membranes — dedicated to sustainable and energy-efficient membrane technologies
  • Green and Sustainable Environments — focused on innovative approaches to lasting environmental solutions

All journals are fully open access. We believe that knowledge about how to build a more sustainable world should be available to everyone — not locked behind paywalls.

Beyond publishing, GSMS is developing a growing program of workshops, webinars, and collaborative research initiatives designed to bring together researchers, students, engineers, and industry professionals under one shared mission.

Why It Matters

The problems GSMS was built to address are not abstractions. Climate change, resource depletion, water contamination, and materials waste are active challenges — in Indonesia and globally. The science that can help solve them is being done right now, in laboratories and field sites across the world.

What is often missing is not the research. It is the community infrastructure that allows that research to move faster, reach further, and matter more.

That is what GSMS is here to provide: a trusted, rigorous, and genuinely open community where good science can find its way to real-world impact — wherever in the world that work is being done.

Looking Forward

GSMS is an early-stage society with ambitious goals. We are honest about where we are: the community is still forming, the journals are establishing their reputations, and the full program of activities is still being built.

But the foundation is real, the mission is clear, and the people behind it are committed for the long term.

We are building toward a society that is internationally recognized, genuinely collaborative, and deeply useful — to researchers at every stage of their careers, to students entering the field, and to the broader project of building a more sustainable world.

We invite you to be part of it.
